Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Sinaloa Cartel head El Chapo, said that an interview video between her husband and Sean Penn published by Rolling Stone showing was not meant to be public.
In an interview with Telemundo that aired Feb. 21, she said she had never been jealous of the Mexican actress Kate del Castillo and that the two had never met.
She said she was unsure if the Rolling Stone interview led Mexican authorities to the arrest. Rolling Stone did not return a request for comment from Telemundo regarding questions about what was and was not on the record during Penn’s interview with the cartel chief.
Coronel studied communications in college and spoke fondly about journalism during her interview. Mexico is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for being a journalist, with a ranking of 148 out of 180 countries, according to Reporters Without Borders’ 2015 World Press Freedom Index. Cartels are infamous for targeting journalists in Mexico.
Coronel went on to speak about the manner in which El Chapo dealt with women and denied that her husband is “sanguine or a rapist.” She said she does not know why the government or others say such things about him.
People “don’t know what they are talking about and base opinions on hearsay,” said El Chapo’s wife. The government “simply makes things up,” said Coronel about the various allegations against her husband.
Commenting about the War on Drugs, Coronel said that the Mexican government created a public persona and image about her husband El Chapo to make him seem like a larger than life figure. It is Coronel’s belief that the Mexican government exaggerates things for cover ups. “Everything bad that happens in the world is because of El Chapo,” according to the government says Coronel.
Coronel denied her husband is one of the richest men in the world, despite Forbes recent rankings. She says that at the time of publishing their list of world’s richest people, El Chapo said “well, maybe the folks at Forbes can tell me where all this money is because I don’t know.”
